The Granata Lab
Understanding brain blood vessels
Our team studies how small blood vessels in the brain become damaged in diseases such as stroke and vascular dementia. These conditions affect millions of people worldwide and currently have very limited treatments.
Using stem cells donated by patients, we recreate human blood vessels in the laboratory, what we call a ‘disease-in-a-dish’ model. This allows us to study what goes wrong in the brain and to test potential treatments in a controlled and safe way.
Our research has already shown that some damaged blood vessels can be partially repaired in the lab, opening new possibilities for future therapies.
This website shares our work with patients, families, and the public through videos, explanations, and events.
